Understanding Dividend Taxes

Dividends received by individuals are classified by the IRS into two categories, each subject to different tax rates:

1. Qualified Dividends

Qualified dividends meet specific holding period requirements and are paid by US corporations or qualified foreign firms. They enjoy preferential tax rates identical to long-term capital gains tax brackets (0%, 15%, or 20%).

2. Ordinary Dividends

Ordinary (non-qualified) dividends do not meet IRS holding period limits (e.g. dividends paid on shares held for short periods, or distributions from REITs). These are stacked directly on top of your other taxable ordinary income and taxed at your regular marginal federal tax bracket rates.

3. Net Investment Income Tax (NIIT)

High-income earners are subject to an additional 3.8% NIIT on the lesser of net investment income (including qualified and ordinary dividends) or the excess MAGI above statutory thresholds:

  • Single Filing Status: $200,000 threshold
  • Married Filing Jointly: $250,000 threshold
  • Head of Household: $200,000 threshold
