Understanding Absolute Return
The Absolute Return measures the simple percentage change of an investment from start to finish. Unlike CAGR or IRR, it is completely time-independent: it does not matter if the gain occurred over 1 month, 1 year, or 10 years. It is the most direct measure of the absolute capital gains or losses generated by an asset or portfolio.
The Mathematical Formula
Absolute Return is computed using the following equation:
Where:
- Start Value = The initial investment capital.
- End Value = The final valuation of the asset or portfolio.
Worked Example
Scenario: Crypto Purchase & Sell
- Buy Price: $5,000
- Sell Price: $7,200
Plugging values into the formula: [ (7,200 – 5,000) / 5,000 ] × 100 = (2,200 / 5,000) × 100 = 44.00%.
This indicates your investment generated an absolute total gain of 44.00%.
